As a symbol of resistance and freedom, the Belvedere demonstrations are woven into the most valuable pages of our nation's history, said the mayor of Cetinje, Nikola Đurašković.
Đurašković, President of the Assembly of Prijestonica Milena Vujović and President of UBNOR Cetinje Borislav Pravilović laid a wreath at the Belvedere, on the occasion of the anniversary of the martyrdom at the Belvedere demonstrations in 1936, the mayor's office announced.
"Throughout its long and glorious history, Montenegro has been the scene of many trials and challenges, but love for the homeland was and remains a force that connects us, inspires and leads us forward. As was often the case in our past, the Belvedere events, the anniversary of which we are celebrating today, originated from that selfless and unwavering devotion to our country, which guided and encouraged our heroic fighters to confront numerous challenges and injustices," he said. is Đurašković.
Pravilović said that this date and these sacrifices were not in vain, because it was "the spark of the general Montenegrin uprising on July 13, 1941, the most magnificent date in the history of the Montenegrin people."
"We are witnessing that the large-state attacks on Montenegro since its independence are still continuing and that they will not stop, they are trying in every way to collapse the civil character of this country and its anti-fascist foundation. The time has come again for all of us, individually and together, to stand under the banner of our only homeland, Montenegro, as our ancestors did, and to defend its independence, its civil and multi-ethnic harmony in every place," Pravilović said.
The Belvedere demonstrations in 1936, it is recalled, were organized by the Montenegrin opposition led by the Federalist Movement and the Communist Party. "The assembly was forbidden by the government of the time on several occasions, on June 26, 1936, large columns of people from the surrounding towns headed towards Cetinje. They were met at the Belvedere by a block of strong military and gendarmerie forces. After the demonstrators gave up on further passage towards Cetinje, incidents, when the forces of the regime start shooting and take the lives of six and injure more than 20 demonstrators," the mayor's office says.
