The initiative of the Serbian National Council of Montenegro to respect the constitutional equality of the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets is slowly but surely returning the Cyrillic alphabet to the state institutions of Montenegro, the council announced today.
"The support that the Serbian National Council received from the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms was extremely important, so that the Cyrillic script can be seen again on the state institutions of Montenegro, on road signs, and there is also an increasing use of the Cyrillic script in the printing of the literary works of the most important writers Association of Writers of Montenegro", is highlighted in the announcement of the Serbian National Council of Montenegro signed by Momčilo Vuksanović, the president.
The Serbian National Council added that in the previous period, by pointing out disrespect and non-compliance with the Constitutional norms, they showed, in an immediate and clear way, the violation of the Constitutional guarantee of the equality of the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets, contained in Article 13. 2 of the Constitution of Montenegro, on the basis of which, the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms sent a recommendation to all state institutions that, in accordance with their competences, they should normatively regulate and concretize the Constitutional guarantee on the equality of the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets.
"Since there is not a single reason for suppressing and abandoning the Cyrillic alphabet, neither historical, nor cultural, nor aesthetic, nor linguistic, nor religious, nor technical-technological, and since the Cyrillic alphabet is one of the basic determinants of the overall identity of Montenegro, its abandonment would mean an interruption with our cultural and spiritual identity, that is, renouncing our historical heritage," the Serbian National Council said in a statement.
They said that the least done in restoring the equality of the Cyrillic alphabet was done in the "Ministry of Education of Montenegro, an institution that should preserve the identity and cultural heritage of Montenegro in the most concrete way".
"The Serbian National Council will continue to insist through its activities that the Cyrillic alphabet in Montenegro be equal in official, and not only in possible and permitted use," concludes the announcement of the Serbian National Council.
