Shelter for abandoned animals in Podgorica under lock and key for another month

The shelter for abandoned animals at Vreli Ribnički, in the settlement of Konik, in Podgorica, will not be able to accept new dogs for another month.

This is what the manager of the Shelter told "Vijesti" yesterday Bojan Asanović.

According to him, the decision on the further ban was made by the inspectors of the Administration for Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary Affairs (UPHVFP), and that status can be extended in September.

The shelter for abandoned animals at Vrele ribničniki is managed by the utility company "Čistoća".

Due to the outbreak of the infectious disease parvovirus, visits to the shelter, including those for the purpose of adoption, as well as the reception of new puppies, were prohibited for the past month.

After the appearance of parvovirus, on June 21, inspectors of the Administration carried out an inspection and in a decision defined a series of actions and measures, which Podgorica "Cistoća" was obliged to implement with the aim of preventing the spread of the infection.

"In this regard, we inform the citizens that, among other things, in the next 30 days: visits to the shelter, reception of new puppies, reception of visitors with the aim of adoption are prohibited (the same will be implemented through volunteers who will have access to the shelter)", they said at the time from that utility company, which he runs Dennis Hot.

The inspection was carried out after an appeal by shelter volunteers.

Through social networks, the volunteers informed the public about the further status of the shelter and that it will be closed for another month.

Among other things, they stated that during the past month no dog was adopted, that no opportunity was used to create trust in the shelter, that in the meantime, as applicants, they were not even informed about the outcome of the inspection...

About ten days ago, "Čistoća" announced that during June and July, 23 puppies died in the shelter due to the parvo virus, and that since the beginning of the year, 30 dogs have died in the shelter.

From the veterinary clinic "Montvet", which has an annual contract for the provision of veterinary services with "Cistoca", they previously clarified that the parvo virus is highly contagious and that it is very difficult to control it in a shelter.

"This virus is very resistant and can stay in the country for up to six months, even a year", they said then and added that the recommendation of the World Association of Small Practice Veterinarians is to combat the virus by euthanizing infected puppies in shelters.

At the time, "Montvet" also said that the shelter does not have a special quarantine for puppies, and that, if there was, he would have to be outside the shelter.
