Preokret stands for the full social integration of people with disabilities, and for this to be a matter of reality, not form, a whole series of measures are needed, some of which do not require much time or effort, said Preokret member Nikola Zekić.
He pointed out that people with disabilities, in all segments of everyday life, face various problems.
"In order to solve this chronic problem in a systemic way, it is necessary, both at the state and local level, to strengthen the instruments for reducing economic dependence, social benefits must be equalized and harmonized with the standard of living, and personal disability benefits made available to a greater number of people with disabilities. in this sense, it is necessary to initiate changes in the law that will entail increased penalties for those employers, for whom it is determined that they did not hire a person because of a disability," says Zekić.
It is also desirable, he adds, that non-governmental organizations that deal with people with disabilities be singled out as a priority and special category in tenders for projects and access to funds that should draw funds from taxation of betting shops, lotteries and games of chance in general, "which is the practice once existed, but has been abolished".
"Through just the two mentioned examples, we point to the way of branching out and expanding the system that will enable people with disabilities to live with dignity, and to truly be productive citizens of society, not despite their disability, but because they have the conditions and systemic support for it. Because the system is as efficient and fair as it allows all citizens to express their potential, and not exclude them in any way from the social, cultural, and economic life of the community. We need a turnaround in that direction," concludes Zekić.
