The fire that engulfed the Prošćen mountains yesterday afternoon, in the area of the Mojkovac municipality, is currently under control, says the commander of the Protection and Rescue Service (SZS), Marinko Medojević.
About 2,5 hectares of conifer forest is burning, and according to him, the situation was particularly critical last night, when there was a danger that the fire would spread to much larger areas. Firefighters can only reach the fire site on foot.
"We extinguish the fire with knapsacks, because we are talking about terrain that vehicles cannot reach. The previous night was extremely difficult, as we tried to limit the spread of the fire, which we succeeded in this morning. Unfortunately, about 2,5 hectares of conifer forest is burning, however, there are no buildings in the area that would be threatened by the fire. Great difficulties are created by felled dry trees, which burn at a high speed and help the fire to spread. I hope that there will be no strong wind today, which would significantly worsen the situation," Medojević told Vijesti.
As they say in SZS, this time the fire was most likely caused by human factors.
