Defining and implementing projects in the field of waste management and environmental protection can significantly contribute to the closure of Chapter 27, it was said during the meeting of the Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Development of the North, Damjan Ćulafić, with representatives of the World Bank for Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The head of the World Bank Office, Christopher Sheldon, informed Ćulafić about the preparation of the new Partnership Framework for cooperation with Montenegro, which will be presented to the Board of Directors in Washington on September 12, but also about planned and ongoing projects related to waste management, environmental protection and water supply.

As announced by the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Development of the North, special attention was paid to the development of the northern part of Montenegro during the meeting.

Šeldon emphasized that the World Bank sees potential in increasing activities in that part of Montenegro and that they are interested in supporting initiatives that will contribute to the sustainable development of the north.

Ćulafić thanked for the support and pointed out the challenges that Montenegro is facing within the framework of Chapter 27.

He added that financial resources and administrative capacities are the key challenges for fulfilling the obligations from this chapter.

"He emphasized that the adoption of the State Plan on waste management is in progress, which will be an important step towards the improvement of environmental protection in Montenegro," says the announcement.

The coordinator of the World Bank program Denis Mesihović said that the assessment of two investment projects related to the reform of waste management and water supply is currently underway and that administrative conditions should be ensured for the preparation and successful implementation of the mentioned projects.

"It was jointly concluded that the definition and implementation of projects in the field of waste management and environmental protection can significantly contribute to the progress of Montenegro on the way to membership in the European Union," the announcement states.

Ćulafić pointed out that it is important to continue and strengthen cooperation with international partners, which will help overcome existing challenges and achieve the goals of sustainable development.
