The company Meta and the platform Iks (X) started processing personal data for the purpose of developing artificial intelligence without prior notification to the users of their services in the Western Balkan countries that are not members of the European Union, and they did not even designate their representative for the processing of personal data in Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Agency for the Protection of Personal Data and Free Access to Information announced that, at a meeting on September 4 in Sarajevo, representatives of independent supervisory bodies dealing with the protection of personal data in the Western Balkans region stated that: the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Data Protection about the personality of Serbia, the Agency for the Protection of Personal Data and Free Access to Information of Montenegro and the Agency for the Protection of Personal Data in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and regarding the change in the privacy policies of Meta and Iks in relation to the processing of personal data for the purpose of developing artificial intelligence.
"In order to exercise the right to protect the personal data of citizens, the representatives of the independent supervisory authorities of all three countries agree to jointly act towards the mentioned companies and to this end coordinate all the activities they undertake in these cases. This initiative will be open to all other independent supervisory authorities the authorities of the Western Balkans and the countries of the Eastern Partnership," the announcement states.
The representatives of all three independent supervisory authorities will, they add, jointly address the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) and the Commission for the Protection of Personal Data of the Republic of Ireland (Data Protection Commission) as competent authorities for dealing with those companies in the EU.
"In order to coordinate the achievement of the goals of the initiative as effectively as possible, the representatives of all three independent supervisory authorities agree that the director of the Agency for the Protection of Personal Data of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dr. Dragoljub Reljić, will be entrusted with this coordination," the announcement concludes.
In front of the Agency for the Protection of Personal Data and Free Access to Information of Montenegro, the meeting was attended by Council members Muhamed Đokaj and Zoran Vujičić and the Director of the Agency Čedomir Mitrović.
