Ulcinj is one of the few towns on the Adriatic, if not the only one, that does not have a fishing port, so fishermen struggle to get their boats into calm waters during storms and big waves. But the knowledge, skill and experience gained over the years and decades on the turbulent sea, not only preserves their vessels but also their lives.
"Each outing on a rough sea is fraught with risk. We closely follow the forecasts and do not leave the safety of our vessels to chance. Despite this, it is uncertain, only those who know and can return can return," one of the fishermen told "Vijesta".
For fishermen from Bojana, the natural harbor is the river itself, but on the way back the estuary is lurking.
"If there is a smaller engine on the boat, I wait for a suitable wave and then I go down with it, and if it is bigger, then I wait for a space to be created between the waves, then I go", explains the fisherman from Bojan, Ivo Knežević, how to avoid the risk at the mouth during strong south winds and huge waves .
Unlike those from Bojan, Port Milena is the natural port for fishermen from Velika plaža, and Port Milena for fishermen from the town of Kacem. In one video, two fishermen can be seen safely entering Kacema with a skillful maneuver between the waves.
