The non-governmental organizations Action for Human Rights (HRA), the Center for Women's and Peace Education ANIMA and the Center for Civic Education (CGO) announced today that the memorial to the late Metropolitan Amfilohij of Montenegro and the Littoral is disputed.
Those NGOs state that the memorial is controversial because, they said, Amfilohije deepened divisions in the Montenegrin democratic society by criticizing the Montenegrin nation, denying LGBTIQ persons, infertile women, but also glorifying the Chetnik movement and war criminals of the 90s, as well as other controversial statements.
"The non-governmental organizations Action for Human Rights (HRA), the Center for Women's and Peace Education ANIMA and the Center for Civic Education (CGO) are surprised by the effective reaction of the Ministry of Culture and Media, which sent the proposal, but also of the Government of Montenegro, which is in a record deadline for the construction of a controversial memorial to the late Metropolitan Amfilohi in Berane, and for months it has been ignoring the illegal revisionist memorializations in Pljevlja," the statement of the three NGOs points out.
The announcement adds that "the obviously bad pre-election rating in Podgorica makes it seem like the late Amfilohi should be pulled for a handful of votes."
"Vijesti" announced earlier today that the ministers from the Bosniak Party (BS) and the Albanian parties left the Government session today because of the executive power's intention to approve the erection of a monument to the late Metropolitan Amfilohi.
Deputy Prime Minister Aleksa Bečić announced that at today's session of the executive power, a decision was made to give consent to the Municipality of Berane for the construction of a monument to Amfilohi, who died in 2020.
