Preventing the negative impacts of climate change and illegal dumping of waste are key challenges facing the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Development of the North, said relevant minister Damjan Ćulafić.

As announced by the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Development of the North, Ćulafić spoke today with the American Ambassador to Montenegro, Judy Reising Rajnke, and emphasized the importance of the support of the United States of America (USA) in facing the key challenges on the way to the European Union (EU).

Ćulafić said that the two key challenges his ministry faces are illegal waste disposal and preventing the negative effects of climate change.

"US aid is of great importance for Montenegro, which is facing numerous challenges," said Ćulafić.

He said that there are solid foundations in cooperation with the USA.

"It is up to us to improve them further", said Ćulafić.

The Ministry announced that Ćulafić particularly emphasized the difficulty of the task of closing Chapter 27, which refers to environmental protection.

That chapter, he added, is one of the most demanding and expensive.

"It is extremely difficult to find a balance between ecological and economic development, especially when it comes to the north of Montenegro," said Ćulafić.

Rajnke said that the Government should remain focused on reforms necessary for EU membership and reiterated that the US is ready to provide support in that process.

The Ministry said that Ćulafić and Rajnke also discussed the Pljevlja Thermal Power Plant.

The announcement states that Ćulafić, during a recent visit, was informed that ecological reconstruction is progressing in the right direction.

Rajnke pointed out that she understands the challenges of Montenegro in that area, which relate to the obligation to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and the harmonization of legislation with European standards.

As announced by the Ministry, the meeting also discussed the possibilities of cooperation between that government department and the US Embassy in the areas of professional development and exchange of experiences.
