The Center for Civic Education (CGO) announced that today it sent letters to the Judicial and Prosecutorial Council to review the work of acting judges of the Basic and High Courts in Podgorica, as well as the ODT in Podgorica in the case against Bojana Lakićević Đuranović, and directed their work in order to avoid the statute of limitations and finalize this procedure.
"Proceedings against Lakićević Đuranović, associate professor of the Faculty of Law of the UCG, ODT in Podgorica were initiated in 2019, after the CGO filed a criminal complaint and indicated that she had integrally transferred parts of the specialist work of the student she was mentoring and published them as her scientific work. "After two years, the Basic Court found her guilty and fined her 2.500 euros. The High Court overturned the verdict, and the Basic Court acquitted her in the repeated proceedings. The High Court is now deciding again in the appeals process," the CGO said in a statement.
The non-governmental organization (NGO) added that the absolute statute of limitations in this case begins in December 2024, when six years have passed since the commission of the criminal offense for which proceedings are being conducted.
"The onset of the statute of limitations would result in the return of Lakićević Đuranović to his workplace, which would cause immeasurable damage to the education system, as well as the education of all future lawyers. CGO expresses the expectation that the Judicial and Prosecutorial Council will ensure that this proceeding is legally concluded before the statute of limitations expires. Otherwise, this example will serve as a decree of the impotence of the Montenegrin judiciary and the educational system to stand in the way of unethical academic behavior of individuals," the CGE statement reads.
