The President of the Municipality of Herceg Novi, Stevan Katic, promised help to the tenants of the ruined PKB barracks in Bajkovina yesterday.
He said that he was amazed by what he saw, promised that he would find a solution and that the municipality was willing to help.
"Next week we will have a meeting with the leadership of the PKB, which owns the barracks. We have to find a solution, because human lives are in danger."
The Municipality's budget provides EUR 100.000 for assistance in solving housing issues of socially vulnerable residents of Novalja.
The residents of the barracks have been living in inhumane conditions for decades, which was confirmed yesterday by Katic, Vice President Miloš Konjević, Secretary for Social Activities and Sports Vesna Samardžić and representatives of PKB.
They promised to try to solve the decades-long problem of eight families, including ten children.
The barracks are in a ruined state - the doors and windows are worn out, the electrical installations are in a catastrophic state, according to the tenants.
"Every now and then a rat gnaws a wire and we are left without electricity. But that's not the worst. Due to bad wiring, fires broke out several times, which fortunately were quickly extinguished and without human casualties," says one of the residents.
They claim that the roof is leaking, that the sewer system is dilapidated and that life is a daily torture.
In winter, they claim, it is impossible to heat the space, and in summer "you can't stay" from the heat.
One of the oldest tenants in the shack is Marija Janković, who has lived there since 1976.
She says that she hoped that it was a temporary solution that she received from PKB, the company where she worked at the time.
"We worry when it's windy and when it's raining. The roof leaks. Electricity and water, which I pay regularly, often due to dilapidation, are a danger to the tenants. Everything is neglected and rotten, and it's no wonder there are rats. This is not conducive to a normal life which man".
The executive director of PKB, Jovica Vučurović, stated that four years ago they offered a location, and that the municipality was supposed to provide houses, but that for some reasons it did not suit the residents of the barracks.
He also explained that PKB is in a five-year reorganization plan and that until 2020 it is not legally able to dispose of property without compensation.
"We cannot promise anything, but we will try to find a solution with the municipality".
