On World Teachers' Day, which is celebrated today, UNICEF called for teachers to be at the heart of reforming the education system, because they are the foundation of quality education.

"In order to achieve a high quality of education, it is necessary for the teaching profession to become prestigious and thus attract the best students who want to dedicate themselves to it, as well as for future teachers to receive relevant training for that job during their studies. Also, it is crucial that all teachers, throughout the country, are continuously provided with training on various topics", said the head of the UNICEF representative office in Montenegro, Mikele Servadei.

Analysis of the education sector 2015−2020, which was carried out with the support of UNICEF, showed that only every fourth teacher attends programs for professional development. "She also pointed to the need to improve the professional training of teachers so that their studies will provide more applicable knowledge for modern teaching practice. Also, this analysis indicates that it is necessary to provide effective school practice within the framework of initial teacher education and to provide all teachers with access to more authoritative courses for their professional development," UNICEF announced.

They said that this organization and the European Union, based on the findings of that analysis, support the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation to develop a new Strategy for the reform of the education system for the period 2025−2035.

"In order for the educational reform to be successful, it is necessary that all interested parties actively participate in its development, implementation, monitoring and assessment of success, especially teachers, parents and students", emphasized Servadei after meeting with students and teachers at the "Njegoš" Elementary School ” in Spuž - on the occasion of the World Teacher's Day.

On that occasion, the teachers at that school shared their recommendations for the reform of the education system.

"For a better quality of education in Montenegro, better cooperation between parents and teachers is necessary," said teacher Dušanka Samardžić.

In order to show from the students' point of view how important the role of teachers is in providing quality education, as well as in child development, UNICEF's young reporters are starting a campaign today on social media with stories about their best teachers.

"I had a period when I felt lonely and vulnerable precisely because of the peer violence I experienced at school. I was lucky to have a professor with me who was my support. Her words of support encouraged me not to give up on education", said Jasmina Beriša, a young UNICEF Montenegro reporter, in messages on TikTok.

Marko Zečević, one of UNICEF's young reporters, remembers the best teacher because she "taught him to think for himself and to be cosmopolitan".

"World Teachers' Day is celebrated on October 5 every year to celebrate the contribution of all teachers around the planet. It is also an opportunity to remember their key role in the education system, the development of every child and the realization of the right to education for every girl and every boy." , concludes UNICEF.
