Sustainable waste management is a priority, and only through close cooperation with companies such as the Podgorica Landfill can we achieve goals at the national level, said Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development Damjan Ćulafić during a tour of this city company.

He and his colleagues attended a meeting there where the work of the company was presented, as well as potential projects for the improvement of waste management. The minister promised to provide all the necessary assistance in order to jointly achieve a higher level of environmental protection and more efficient waste management, according to a statement from the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development (MERS).

"This is of essential importance for the health of citizens and the preservation of the natural resources of Montenegro," Ćulafić said.

As stated in the MERS announcement, within the presentation of the work of the Landfill, the planned improvement projects related to the thermal treatment of waste, the construction of a cogeneration plant, a plant for the treatment of electronic and electrical waste, a plant for the treatment of tires, as well as a treatment plant were highlighted construction waste.

Ćulafić pointed out that the Landfill represents an important segment and that the Ministry is committed to improving its work through joint projects and support.

The executive director of the Landfill, Aleksandar Božović, informed the minister that contracts were signed with the municipalities of Kolašin and Mojkovac regarding waste disposal, and Ćulafić emphasized that cooperation with local self-government is of key importance for the successful implementation of environmental policies.

"Local governments are our key partners in the implementation of projects related to the improvement of environmental standards, because they directly participate in the implementation of measures on the ground. Without their active involvement, we cannot achieve the desired results in terms of environmental protection and sustainable development. We must work together to develop local infrastructure for waste management, but also on educating citizens about the importance of proper disposal and recycling," Ćulafić pointed out.

During the meeting, the Landfill emphasized the importance of further involvement in the drafting of two by-laws of the Waste Management Act, according to the MERS announcement.

At the end of the meeting, Ćulafić concluded that the Landfill and the Ministry will continue to cooperate in order to improve infrastructure and environmental standards, because responsible waste management is one of the main prerequisites for the sustainable development of Montenegro.
