"She feeds my children... But you see no one wants to come"

On the Millenium bridge in the center of Podgorica around 14 p.m., a three-year-old mare fell from exhaustion or illness while pulling a cart.

She first started stumbling on the road, so Bajram Beriša, who was driving the cart she was pulling, freed the cart and put her on the ground in the shade by the side of the road.

The mare immediately fell.

The "Vijesti" team found her in a very bad condition because, although Berisha tried to help her to her feet and cooled her with water, she fell again and was breathing hard.

Citizens stopped to ask what happened to the animal and offered to call the vet. A young man brought a large can of water and a kilo of sugar and gave it to Berisha to try to refresh the animal.

Another young man approached Berisha very angry, asking him if he had hurt the horse, ready to deal with him if he did.

Beriša justified himself by saying that the horse was fed and that he was taking care of it. He said the mare foaled a month ago. While she was lying down, milk could be seen dripping from her breast.

He said that she had been sick before when she allegedly ate a cloth, and now he suspects that she ate feathers in the meadow where she grazed.

Beriša and "Vijesti" reporters unsuccessfully called veterinary stations and inspections. No one came. One because veterinarians were allegedly on the field, the other because it is not their jurisdiction.

After almost an hour and a half, the owner of the horse, Ermin Huković, came.

His idea was to somehow take the horse to the veterinary station in Maslini, but seeing that the horse could not stand, he gave it up. He also called the vets to no avail.

Huković, who came on crutches, said that the mare feeds his children and that he would never hurt her in any way.

In the end, he called a friend to take the animal to the vet with a trailer. While waiting for transport, and after two hours of lying by the side of the road and being refreshed by passers-by, the mare reared up.

"So do you think that for 30 euros for the vet, I would risk losing her." She feeds my children. But you can see that nobody wants to come", Huković said.
