Grbović: Attacks on medical workers to incriminate themselves and include them in the criminal legislation

The director of the General Hospital in Pljevlja, Saša Grbović, condemned today's knife attack on neuropsychiatrist Ilhan Tursumović while he was performing his duties at the Pljevlja Health Center.

"On the occasion of today's incident that took place in the premises of the Pljevlja Health Center, when Dr. Ilhan Tursumović was attacked and wounded several times, on behalf of the collective of the General Hospital of Pljevlja and on my own behalf, I strongly condemn this act of violence and send my sincere support and wishes to our colleague, Dr. Tursumović for a speedy recovery. This violent event disturbed all healthcare workers as well as the entire public of Pljevlja, warning us about the extremely unfavorable and unprotected position of all healthcare workers. The above-mentioned case is not an isolated one, but a chronic social problem in which medical personnel are faced with various forms of violence, from verbal - insults and threats, to physical - which in today's case resulted in severe physical injuries to colleague Tursumović," said Grbović in a statement. .

The director of the Pljeval hospital appealed to the competent authorities, primarily the police, the prosecution and the judicial system, but also to the entire society to take the necessary measures so that health workers receive adequate protection and can perform their profession unhindered.

"Health care is by its nature very sensitive and demanding, therefore, in order to ensure adequate conditions for its provision and realization, strong social support, both institutional and normative, is necessary. This is another alarm that attacks on medical workers should be criminalized and included in criminal legislation, in order to finally put an end to violence against employees in one of the most important branches of social activity - the health system. I hope that our appeals, caused by the truly unenviable position of our profession, will bear fruit and that we will start solving this burning problem in the near future. Once again, I strongly condemn this act of violence and I wish my colleague Tursumović a speedy recovery", Grbović stated in the announcement.
