The open canal in Podgorica is waiting for passers-by

It is not known when the works will be completed and the buried canal in Jola Piletića Street in Podgorica, which was dug by the crews of the city company "Vodovod i kanalizacija" due to a pipeline failure.

That company responded to "Vijesta" regarding the works, but did not respond to the question related to the backfilling of the canal.

Several residents of the surrounding buildings told the newsroom that they had to go down to the road for three weeks in order to bypass the ditch on the sidewalk. They say that they are especially worried about the children who attend the "Sutjeska" Elementary School because, they say, "the winter period follows and it gets dark earlier, so they may be at risk."

"Vijesti" asked the Podgorica company "Vodovod i kanalizka" when the work on that part of the street will be completed, but they did not receive an answer.

From the company he heads Aleksandar Nišavić, it was said that it was a failure of the AC (asbestos-cement) pipeline, which is 200 millimeters in diameter.

"The pipeline is located at a depth of 1,7 meters. As it is a very sensitive material, it is necessary to bury the pipeline in layers", they said.

They explained that the first layer of fine material is installed up to a height of 30 centimeters above the top of the pipe.

"The other layers are made of coarser material. Due to the specificity of the pipeline material, tamping is done manually and machines for soil tamping (vibro plates and rammers) must not be used.

According to them, with "this type of work, it is necessary to monitor the subsidence of the soil over a certain period of time".

"Due to all of the above, it was not possible to complete the aforementioned failure in a short period of time, i.e. to carry out the complete backfilling of the trench," the Waterworks concluded.
