According to the results of the Census of Population, Households and Apartments in 2023, the most common female name in Montenegro is Jelena, and the most common male name is Nikola, data published by Monstat showed.
Among the most popular female names are Milica, Marija, Ivana, Ana, Milena, Jovana, Dragana, Vesna and Anđela, and among male names are Marko, Miloš, Luka, Dragan, Aleksandar, Petar, Zoran, Ivan and Milan.
In Montenegro, the most common surname is Popović, followed by Marković, Bulatović, Vuković, Radović, Kovačević, Jovanović, Knežević, Vujović and Ivanović.
Monstat also announced which are the most popular names by age category. A noticeable trend is that girls up to the age of nine are most often called Sofija, while Jovana dominates among women aged 25 to 49. In women over 55, Radmila and Vesna are the most common.
Among boys up to 14 years old, the most popular names are Luka, then Lazar and Vasilije. Nikola is the most common name among men between the ages of 20 and 34. For those over 55, there are Zoran, Dragan and Slobodan.
Data on the most common female names by municipality show that Milica was the favorite choice in Andrijevica, Bar, Berane, Bijelo Polje, Kolašin, Mojkovac, Pljevlji, Plužine, Žabljak and Zeta.
Jelena is the most popular in Budva, Herceg Novi, Nikšić, Podgorica and Savnik, and in the areas of the municipalities of Cetinje, Kotor, Tivat and Tuza - Marija. Suzana is the most common female name in Ulcinj, Hajrija in Gusinj, Elma in Petnjica, Amina in Plav and Rožaje.
When it comes to men, Nikola dominates in Bar, Berane, Bijelo Polje, Budva, Cetinje, Danilovgrad, Herceg Novi, Kolašin, Kotor, Mojkovac, Nikšić, Pljevlja, Podgorica, Savnik, Tivat, Ulcinj and Zeta.
The name Dragan is most popular in Andrijevica, Ismet in Gusinje, Samir in Petnjica, Adis in Plav, Veselin in Plužine, Haris in Rožaje, Anton in Tuzi, and Marko in Žabljak.
