The Center for the Protection and Study of Birds (CZIP) announced that they received a permit from the Environmental Protection Agency for the establishment of a feeding ground for griffon vultures in the Piva Nature Park.
They point out that it will be the first such feeding ground in our country and that its establishment will directly contribute to the preservation of the Balkan population of this endangered species.
"Griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) are one of the four species of vultures that can be found in Europe. It is a large bird whose wingspan reaches almost three meters and can reach a weight of 7,5 to 11 kilograms. Vultures play a key role in ecosystem as cleaners of nature, by feeding dead animals they accelerate their safe decomposition and prevent the potential spread of infections," CZIP announced on social networks.
They indicate that once these birds were inhabitants of Morača, Tara and Cijevna canyons.
"Today we can only see them during rare visits and in passing. The main threats to their survival are poisoning, collision, lack of food, habitat destruction. The recent visit of griffon vultures near Pljevlje, recorded by citizens, shows that this feeding ground could be key for their return. These birds often travel hundreds of kilometers in search of food, which encourages us that the new feeding ground in the Piva Nature Park will be regularly visited."
CZIP reminds that griffon vultures do not currently nest in Montenegro.
"There is hope that a pair, attracted by the feeding area, might decide to build a nest here. This would be a huge step for the return of this species to our region. From the 1950s to the 1980s, the number of griffon vultures declined due to mass poisoning by wolves. and the jackal. Today we are working to correct those mistakes and bring back these priceless guardians of nature," the post reads.
