The long-term solution to the problem of pollution in Bijelo Polje is the introduction of heating of the city, said the President of the Municipality, Petar Smolović.

He said this at a meeting with the Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Development of the North, Damjan Ćulafić, who was on a working visit to that northern municipality.

At the meeting, as stated in the Municipality's announcement, there was talk of the implementation of a tender for a waste water treatment plant, the protection of the Lim River, the continuation of capital projects, as well as joint activities to find a suitable location for a regional waste processing center for several municipalities in the north of Montenegro. "The reduction in the number of coal-burning stoves, during the design, required the use of eco-friendly stoves, the installation of filters to reduce air pollution in all public institutions, the delivery of air purifiers in kindergartens, the reduction of the number of individual stoves, as well as the installation of energy-efficient air conditioners, are just some of the measures that the Municipality of Bijelo Polje implemented in the previous period, in order to reduce air pollution, which is a long-standing problem of our city. The reduction of environmental pollution in the form of remediation of illegal landfills also recorded progress, this year 18 illegal landfills were removed. The ultimate goal is the construction of a heating plant for the heating of Bijelo Polje, which will clean the air in the long term", said Smolović in his introductory speech.

"The regional landfill, as the biggest problem in the north, must be solved as soon as possible. The municipalities of the north, in cooperation with NGOs and the civil sector, should agree on a possible location in order to start implementation. Bad awareness among citizens is what needs to be changed first, so that in general all local administrations can get into the implementation of pollution reduction projects in the right way", announced Minister Ćulafić.
