These days, the Durmitor National Park Protection Service is facing the problem of using and driving snowmobiles in that protected area, especially in locations that lead to the mountain massif, the National Parks (NPCG) announced.
"Snowmobiles, quads and drones in recent years represent a serious threat to the chamois population, but also to all other species of animals as a potential means of poaching. Quite often, a large number of individuals, ignoring the warning of our supervisors, invade Durmitor NP with snowmobiles, causing noise, disturbing the chamois, breaking up the herd and separating the kids from the goats," the announcement reads.
They point out that the chamois population on Durmitor is a unique and autochthonous species whose numbers have been increasing in recent years, and that disturbance and noise in the habitat is an extremely negative factor that can disrupt every segment of the species' life.
The NPCG reminds that Article 16 of the Law on National Parks strictly prohibits the harassment of animal species, especially during the period of reproduction and difficult living and movement conditions in deep snow and lack of food in winter conditions.
They called on citizens and visitors to respect the law and not to use snowmobiles in the protected area, and they especially appealed to tourist organizations and agencies that offer snowmobile and quad bike rides as part of their offers.
"In the coming period, prohibition signs for snowmobiles, quads and drones will be placed in the area of the Durmitor National Park, in order to acquaint the locals and visitors with the rules of behavior in protected areas," the announcement reads.
All forms of illegal activity in national parks can be reported to the Monitoring Center's telephone number 067/000-825.
