The amount of plastic bags disposed of at the landfill in Podgorica has decreased by about 70 percent compared to the previous period, the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Development of the North (MERS) announced.

From that government department, they stated that the results of the morphological analysis conducted at the Podgorica Landfill point to a significant success in reducing the amount of plastic bags that are disposed of.

"Preliminary data show that the amount of plastic bags has decreased by about 70 percent compared to the previous period," the statement said.

That result, as they said from MERS, confirms the positive effect of the measures provided for in the Law on Waste Management, which are aimed at reducing the use of single-use bags.

"Also, it shows the growing environmental awareness of citizens, who contribute significantly to the preservation of the environment through responsible behavior," the announcement states.

The Ministry reminded that the law stipulates that bags with a wall thickness of 15 to 50 microns are prohibited, while packaging bags up to 15 microns and over 50 microns are still allowed, with the obligation to pay a fee for bags thicker than 50 microns.

Those measures, they added, were designed to reduce the use of hard-to-degrade plastic materials and encourage wider use of environmentally friendly alternatives.

"Plastic bags, which represent one of the most harmful forms of waste, have a long-term negative impact on nature and human health," said MERS.

As they stated, reducing their use directly contributes to the preservation of landfill space, reducing pollution and achieving the goals of sustainable waste management.

"MERS reminds citizens and business entities of the importance of complying with regulations and appeals for further responsibility in the handling of waste. Together, we can contribute to the preservation of natural resources and the creation of a healthier future," says the announcement.

The Ministry thanked everyone who has supported these efforts so far.

"We continue together towards the goal - a cleaner and healthier Montenegro," said MERS.
