Civic activists also officially supported the informal student group "Kamo Śutra?", which organized protests after the tragedy in Cetinje and announced the next one for January 16 in Podgorica. 159 of them signed a letter of support for the students and their right to peacefully express their displeasure due to, as stated, the tragic events in Montenegro.

The letter condemns the "unacceptable targeting" of students and calls for an end to this practice.

"In these difficult times, when unity and responsibility are needed, we especially condemn examples of targeting young people by certain political parties in power, as well as attempts to classify them into certain party camps, with the obvious intention of reducing the spontaneous and legitimate student protest to the level of grass-roots party calculation.

Those who were guided by the slogans of 'Victory, not division' are now, in the most challenging moments for Montenegro, trying to divide young people and present their legitimate demands as part of party games. In addition, they dangerously target young people and other participants of peaceful gatherings, which is unacceptable, because all citizens have the right to peaceful gatherings. Such behavior is politically irresponsible, damages the democratic process and discourages civil activism, which is crucial for the development of any society," the letter states.

Attempts to avoid responsibility, civil activists add, are accompanied by unacceptable targeting and relativization of the current situation, while recalling similar practices of previous governments, which confirms the need to put personal interests before public ones.

"We remind you that similar pressures on student movements in the region did not succeed, but made the protests more massive and additionally mobilized the citizens. We believe that the students in Montenegro, as bearers of change, will continue the dignified struggle for justice and responsibility, inspiring the wider community to participate and solidarity.

The importance of engaging young people in moments like this is priceless. Their initiative shows that civic courage and solidarity can become drivers of change in society," the letter reads.

They called on all political actors to stop the practice of targeting and to support the right of young people to free expression and peaceful protest.

"The young people from the group 'Kamo śutra' remind us that the right to justice is universal, and that the truth is a basic prerequisite for the healing of any society. Their fight is not only theirs - it is the fight of all of us for a better Montenegro, in which the citizens will be safe and institutions responsible.

We appeal to all other political subjects, civil organizations, citizens, to express their support for the students by respecting their instructions and requests communicated through official channels, and to refrain from excessive media exposure," the activists said.

They said that all interested civil activists can join the initial list of signatories by sending an email to the address: kolektiv.kamo.sjutra@gmail.com.
