The Council for Citizens' Control of Police Work announced that they welcome the decisive and professional response of the Police Directorate to the spread of hate speech on social networks in connection with the tragic events in Cetinje.
"Immediately after registering examples of hate speech and extremism, the Council unanimously issued a recommendation to carefully and continuously monitor this phenomenon, which not only disturbs the public, shows disrespect for the victims and their families, but also seriously encourages further polarization in Montenegrin society," Zoran Čelebić, the president of that body, told Vijesti on behalf of the Council.
He pointed out that the Council is able to conclude that the Police is acting in accordance with the issued recommendations.
"With frequent and clear public announcements, a proactive and professional approach and self-initiative action by police officers towards examples of hate speech and threats of violence are demonstrated, while taking all necessary actions and consulting the competent state prosecutor's offices. Such an approach by the Police Directorate and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in 2022, when the tragedy in Cetinje also occurred, was completely absent," said Čelebić.
He added that the Council welcomes the work of the international global Strong Cities Network, in which the capital city of Podgorica and the municipalities of Danilovgrad, Bar, Ulcinj, Rožaje, Gusinje and Berane are members, and actively supports them in their efforts to address the problems of hatred, extremism and polarization.
"The Council calls on mayors and city administrations to support prevention efforts and strengthen the role of local communities in recognizing and addressing all forms and manifestations of hatred, extremism and polarization, which can and do lead to disrespect for human rights, disruption of public order and peace, and violence," said Čelebić.
