MERS: 78 illegal landfills remediated in the past three years

In Montenegro, 78 illegal landfills have been remediated in the past three years, and the remediation of unregulated landfills at 25 locations is underway, announced the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development (MERS) and the Environmental Protection Fund.

As stated in the joint statement, the remediation of illegal landfills is being carried out by the Environmental Protection Fund, based on the Public Tender for the Removal of Waste Discarded into the Environment.

MERS and the Eco Fund said that last year, the rehabilitation of 62 unregulated landfills was reported, and the project was implemented at 36 locations.

According to them, so far the project has been implemented in Nikšić, where three unregulated landfills with a total area of ​​ten thousand square meters (m2) have been remediated and more than 1,5 thousand cubic meters (m3) of waste have been removed.

"In Plav, six unregulated landfills with a total area of ​​8.953 m2 were remediated, and around 40 tons of waste were removed. In Bar, one landfill with a total area of ​​one thousand m2 was remediated, and more than 830 tons of waste were removed," the statement said.

It is added that in Bijelo Polje, 18 unregulated landfills with a total area of ​​3,5 thousand m2 were remediated and more than 1,4 m3 of waste were removed, while in Danilovgrad, eight illegal landfills with a total area of ​​1,650 m2 were regulated, and around 500 m3 of waste was removed.

MERS and the Eco Fund announced that the rehabilitation of unregulated landfills at 25 locations is underway.

As they specified, ten unregulated landfills are currently being remediated in Zeta, six in Berane, four in Andrijevica, three in Kolašin, and two in Mojkovac.

The statement notes that a total of 2023 illegal landfills were remediated during 40.

MERS and the Eco Fund said that in 2022, the project to remove waste dumped into the environment was implemented in two municipalities.

"In Bar, at the Sokolana landfill, with an area of ​​945 m2, 1.226 tons of waste were removed, while in the municipality of Mojkovac, at the Stevanovac 2 landfill, with an area of ​​2.186 m2, 45 tons of waste were removed," the joint statement said.

The removed waste was reportedly disposed of at the Možura sanitary landfill and the Livade Podgorica landfill, while municipalities in the north disposed of their waste at temporary landfills.
