Montenegro is committed to adapting to climate change, said the Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development, Damjan Ćulafić, emphasizing the urgency of dealing with the increasingly pronounced consequences of climate change in Southeast Europe.
As announced by the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development (MERS), Ćulafić said this at the ministerial conference "Challenges in Adapting to Climate Change in Southeast Europe", which is being held in Slovenia.
The press release states that the conference served as a dynamic platform for the exchange of practical experiences, tools and perspectives, as well as encouraging cooperation towards smarter, faster and more systematic adaptation in Southeastern Europe.
As it is added, the Montenegrin delegation had the opportunity to present the efforts the country is making at the national and international levels to contribute to the global fight against climate change.
Ćulafić emphasized the urgency of dealing with the increasingly pronounced consequences of climate change in the Southeast European region, as well as the importance of providing financial support from developed countries for the implementation of adaptation measures to changing climate conditions.
He presented ongoing activities with a special focus on the development of the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan, which, as he stated, is in the final phase.
Ćulafić emphasized the strong commitment of Montenegro and MERS to the process and activities to implement obligations in Chapter 27 - Environment and Climate Change.
The MERS statement states that the conference served as a platform for exploring future perspectives aimed at accelerating EU accession, as well as encouraging constructive dialogue and exchange of ideas, in order to identify important needs in the field of climate change adaptation.
At the panel discussion "Now for the Future - The Institute of Hydrology and Meteorology as a Basis for Adaptation to Climate Change", Ćulafić said that it is important for governments and decision-makers to recognize the importance of national meteorological and hydrological services as part of an international network coordinated through the World Meteorological Organization, in order for them to be effective.
"National meteorological and hydrological services have a crucial position in improving security, sustainable development and economic growth, improving access to clean water, increasing food production, mitigating and adapting to climate change, as well as improving the quality of life of citizens," said Ćulafić.
