The Embassy of the Czech Republic is organizing a free Czech language course, which starts in Cetinje and Podgorica on Thursday.
26 students from the Faculty of Montenegrin Language and Literature and around 20 students from the Faculty of Political Sciences and the Faculty of Philology have already applied for the three-month course.
The course is taught by five professors from the Czech Republic and applications are still open.
Czech Ambassador Janina Hrebičkova said that Montenegro and the Czech Republic are very close, not only in the fight for the spirit of freedom, but also for the dignity of every human being.
President of the Faculty of Management for Montenegrin Language and Literature Boban Batrićević said that he considers the Czech Republic his second country and that he has family ties with it. He added that the Czech Republic stands with Montenegro on its European path and shares the experiences it has gained during the transition.
"Czechs know very well what it means to lose your independence and what it means when you live under the oppression of an undemocratic regime that constantly interferes in your daily life and does not allow you to realize your national interests and your national identity," Batrićević said at a press conference at the European House in Podgorica.
Miloš Zelenka, Head of the Department of Slavic Languages at the Faculty of Education of the University of South Bohemia, highlighted the long tradition of cooperation and mutual contacts between Montenegro and the Czech Republic, adding that the idea for the course arose as an expression of the Czech Republic's diplomatic interest in the democratic development of Montenegro.
Dean of the Faculty of Political Sciences Boris Vukićević said that initially the target group of this course was not political science students, but that he was glad that the students recognized the importance of culture and language.
The Dean of the Faculty of Philology, Igor Lakić, announced that philology is not just about learning languages, but also about students learning about the civilization and culture of other countries, as well as that language shapes culture and culture shapes language.
The project is implemented by the Embassy of the Czech Republic, the Faculty of Philology, the Faculty of Political Sciences, the Faculty of Montenegrin Language and Literature, and the Faculty of Education of the South Bohemian University in České Budějovice.
