Podgorica Mayor Saša Mujović and security sector leaders held a meeting at which the expansion of the camera network at key locations in Podgorica was announced.
Mujović spoke with the Minister of Interior Danilo Šaranović, Acting Director of the Police Administration Lazar Šćepanović and the Head of the Regional Security Center “Centar” Goran Jokić. The meeting was also attended by the Director of the Inspection Affairs Directorate of the Capital City Branko Kovačević and the Head of the Communal Police Service Radenko Radenović.
The meeting was an opportunity to discuss the harmonization of joint activities in the field of security, coordination of jurisdictions, as well as the improvement of penal policy and supervision in the territory of the capital, the Capital announced.
Mujović emphasized that cooperation between the Capital City and the Ministry of Internal Affairs is "first and foremost a necessity, and then something that is understood by the nature of things," bearing in mind that Podgorica is the capital of Montenegro, where the largest number of residents live.
He particularly emphasized the importance of improving communal order on the city streets, but also that, in addition to intensifying the work of the Inspection Department and the Municipal Police, it is necessary to work on changing citizens' awareness and traffic culture, in order to have more visible results. Equally important, as Mujović stated, are the legal amendments that would more closely regulate jurisdiction and penal policy, which "should lead to positive developments in the coming period", bearing in mind that they are divided between the services of the Capital City and the traffic police, which "in many situations makes timely reaction difficult". In addition, the mayor emphasized that the safety of citizens is a priority, and that it is important for all institutions to act in accordance with common goals.
Šaranović said that the Ministry of Interior is open to cooperation with the Capital, "especially since joint action, not only in the area of establishing communal order, such cooperation can be very fruitful," the statement reads.
The Minister pointed out the importance of further improving digital services and software capacities, both of the Police Directorate and the Capital City, which would "significantly contribute to the work of all services at both the local and state levels". He emphasized that maintaining public order and peace remains a common goal, but also recalled the "traditionally good cooperation" with utility services and the Capital City Protection and Rescue Service. New measures that should be implemented in order to improve supervision, increase efficiency in work, and strengthen coordination between police services at all levels were also considered.
Šćepanović briefed Mujović on key activities, police work and the security situation in the capital. He highlighted "the efforts being made to strengthen personnel capacities", as well as the importance of cooperation between the police and local administration in order to improve security.
"He particularly emphasized that attention will be paid to the modernization of the video surveillance system and strengthening the capacities of the Operations Center, which plays a key role in monitoring and responding to security challenges. In this regard, it is planned to expand the camera network at key locations in the city, all in accordance with applicable legal regulations, which will contribute to more efficient surveillance and prevention of misdemeanors," the Capital City announced.
Šćepanović recalled previous requests to the Capital City for the allocation of land for the construction of a collective housing facility to address the housing issue of employees in the security sector. He expressed his belief that the new city administration will "be more attentive" and will consider their request, which "in addition to resolving an important issue, also represents additional motivation for police officers who are increasingly choosing this profession as their life's work".
"The meeting concluded that the Capital City and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, i.e. the Police Department and the Central Bank 'Centar', will continue working together to create a safer environment for all citizens, and that through further cooperation and coordination, they will improve the state of stationary traffic, illegal parking and overall communal order, then improve prevention strategies, but also implement specific measures that will result in better security, more efficient action and the creation of conditions for the long-term improvement of the quality of life of all citizens of Podgorica," the statement reads.
