The Center for Civic Education (CCE) condemned the actions of the Police Directorate, which is prosecuting journalist Brano Mandić through the Minor Offences Court for his column criticizing the public statement of University of Montenegro professor Aleksandar Stamatović.
"This is a direct attack on freedom of expression and the right of journalists to critically analyze social and political events. Freedom of the media is the foundation of democracy, and such actions lead to the suppression of pluralism of opinion and public debate. It is absurd that Stamatović did not bear any consequences for the lascivious allusions made in the AdriaTV program against the show's editor, in the proceedings initiated by the CCE before the Ethics Board of the University of Montenegro, whose members promoted shamelessness in defending Stamatović's scandalous performance, which was also pointed out by Mandić. In addition to the lack of affirmation of ethical principles, the institutions decided to prosecute anyone who dared to point out their absence," the CCE stated.
They called on the relevant institutions to ensure that fundamental human rights, including freedom of speech, are respected. They stressed that they are particularly concerned that the repressive apparatus is once again being used against critical and free voices in society.
"In a democratic society, criticism of public statements and actions of individuals, especially those in social positions, must be protected - not sanctioned," said CCE.
Mandić informed the public today that the Police Directorate has initiated proceedings against him before the Minor Offences Court in Podgorica due to allegations from a column in which he criticizes the public speech of University of Montenegro professor Aleksandar Stamatović.
