As part of the reforestation campaign organized on Gorica Hill, 120 new seedlings were planted.
"A message was sent from Gorica today that we must take care of the environment and protected areas of the city every day, both as individuals and as institutions," it was announced after the action, which was also attended by Podgorica Mayor Saša Mujović and European Union Ambassador to Montenegro Johan Sattler.
Mujović said that he was particularly pleased to support the action and thanked Ambassador Sattler for his presence, as well as his continued support for the development of Podgorica and Montenegro.
"I am very pleased that today I have the opportunity to participate in the afforestation of Gorica Hill - this is the lungs of Podgorica and one of the most beautiful corners of Podgorica, and I am especially pleased to be doing this in the company of Mr. Satler, a man who is, above all, a great friend of Montenegro and gives us the wind at our backs on our path to the EU. It is a matter of true symbolism that today, together with me, he is laying some new foundations for planting, some new seedlings for new generations that will visit this hill as one of the most beautiful parts of Podgorica, the future city of the European Union," said the mayor.
Mujović, the Capital City announced, also recalled a photograph dating from the beginning of the last century showing Gorica without a single tree, emphasizing that today's Gorica is an indicator of how much the power of vision, ideas, and effort always yields fruits and results.
"This Gorica that we have now is the merit of former generations, and we who are doing this today have the task of continuing in the same footsteps," said Mujović.
Satler said that he was particularly pleased to be in Gorica today, a place that is a symbol of Podgorica and after which the city is named.
"I truly feel like a Podgorica resident and I am happy to be here today with the mayor to do something very important together, which concerns the preservation and protection of the environment in Montenegro. I want to use this year not only to make progress in terms of European integration, which we are certainly doing, but also to raise awareness about the environment and a clean Montenegro, which is an ecological state. When it comes to afforestation, we started the campaign last year with the organization "Boranka" in the vicinity of Nikšić and planted hundreds of seedlings, and we continue the mission here in a place that was unfortunately hit by a fire last year, and it is important that we think about Gorica, not just a few days after the fire, but continuously, so that we can preserve and improve the environment for generations to come," said Satler.
The Director of the Podgorica Agency for Protected Areas Management, Jasna Gajević, said that 120 seedlings were planted today with the support of the city company Zelenilo, which facilitated the implementation of the action in a specific terrain where mechanization was needed.
"These are deciduous tree seedlings, namely oak, ash, juniper and stone pine, respecting the recommendations of the forestry profession not to plant coniferous trees on purpose because they regenerate themselves. We are now also thinning out the part of the forest that was affected by the fire and what is most important is to remove the burned trees, and last year, about 1800 m3 of burned mass was cleared from this location," said Gajović and expressed special gratitude to the companies that donated funds for the purchase of seedlings last year. Today's action was supported by city companies, services, as well as the "Boranka" Organization and numerous citizens.
