Vuk Iković, Preokret councilor in Danilovgrad, said that citizens deserve the opportunity to decide in a referendum whether they are against "a drastic increase in the price of water."
"On Thursday, March 27, the Danilovgrad Municipal Assembly will hold a session where councilors will decide on calling a referendum on the fair price of water. Citizens deserve the opportunity to express their opposition to the drastic increase in the price of water, which has already increased by 53% in order to finance the increase in salaries of employees of the water utility. Although higher salaries for Water Utility workers are justified, the funds for them can be provided by reducing network losses, eliminating illegal connections and modernizing the system, instead of constantly increasing citizens' bills. Currently, for every glass of water we pour, two are spilled and two are stolen. Therefore, it is necessary to invest in the modernization of the water utility system and reducing losses, and not just in increasing prices," the statement reads.
He recalls that opposition councilors, after the Assembly previously failed to accept the citizens' initiative to repeal the decision to increase the price of water, submitted a request to convene a special session at which a decision on the referendum would be made.
"The referendum decision allows citizens to assess for themselves whether the increase in water prices is justified. The issue of fair water prices is not only an economic one, but also a key issue of quality of life and responsibility towards citizens. We call on citizens to demand that their councilors stand by them and support the calling of the referendum," Iković said.
