After the memorial plaque dedicated to football players who fell in the National Liberation War (NOB) was temporarily moved due to the reconstruction of the western stand of the City Stadium in Nikšić, members of the Association of National Liberation War Veterans (UBNOR) and anti-fascists of Nikšić rediscovered it today.
Previously, the stadium management and FK "Sutjeska" placed it in the place where it was located before the reconstruction.
"The football club, which was founded in 1927, gathered progressive and advanced youth, who were a thorn in the side of the Nikšić gendarmes. Since March 1945, the football club has been called 'Sutjeska'. A large number of football players of that time, pre-war communists and members of the SKO, joined the national liberation struggle, fighting bravely, a number of whom laid down their lives for freedom. This memorial plaque was erected in their memory," said Sonja Nikčević, president of UBNOR and anti-fascist Nikšić.
The memorial plaque contains the names of ten football players, three of whom were declared national heroes. Muharem Asović, Đorđije Premović and Lazar Radojević were declared national heroes, and in addition to these three, the plaque also contains the names of: Luka Abramović, Milutin Vujačić, Ljubo Vučurović, Mić Duletić, Božidar Zvicer, Jov Jovović and Rade Krivokapić.
"What they shared was the idea of freedom, love for their homeland, the fight against occupiers and fascists. The torch lit by the July 13th Uprising led them to the final victory and freedom in which the post-war generations have been living for 80 years. They laid down their lives in the fight for freedom, their bright examples are an eternal light that burns and warns us not to forget. The memory of these brave football fighters must remain permanent for generations to come. I am glad that Sutjeska and UBNOR are preserving the memory of the fallen football players. I hope that younger generations will also be informed and cultivate a culture of remembrance of those who gave their lives for the freedom we live in," said Nikčević.
