From the beginning of January until Thursday, the municipal police sanctioned 4.061 drivers for illegal parking, of which 10 percent, 400, were fined in the very center of Podgorica, "Vijesti" was told from the Capital City.
They point out that the Law on Communal Activities prescribes a fine of 500 to 2.000 euros for an individual for illegal parking.
"The fine ranges from 1.500 to 7.500 euros for a legal entity. For entrepreneurs, the fine varies from 1.000 to 5.000 euros... For minor violations, fines are imposed by misdemeanor order: 1.000 for a legal entity, 400 for entrepreneurs, and 100 euros for a responsible person in a legal entity," the Municipal Police responded.
Punishing reckless drivers in the city center began on September 3rd last year as part of the campaign "Stop Traffic Ignorance in the Center of Podgorica".
The Capital City said at the time that the initiative was launched in response to the increasing number of traffic violations, which seriously undermine the safety of road users.
Responding to a question from "Vijesti" whether the action to punish reckless drivers was carried out only in the very center of Podgorica, the city administration emphasized that the competent services "expanded the scope of action to the City Quarter as well as the part of the city across the Morača River."
"...Where the problem of non-compliance with regulations is particularly pronounced. Also, vehicles were dislocated using a special 'spider' vehicle. In the aforementioned period, 400 drivers were sanctioned and 427 drivers were dislocated. This action included streets and boulevards in the inner city center," the Capital City said, adding that they had to step up control of illegal parking "as well as sanction reckless drivers."
They pointed out that traffic culture in Podgorica is "at a low level and that this is something that needs to be worked on continuously."
"... Therefore, we appeal to citizens to respect the signage. In the coming period, the aforementioned action will continue, and activities will be additionally focused on other parts of the city, especially Zabjelo, Zagorič and the Old Airport," the Capital City Administration said.
The Directorate for Inspection Affairs (UIP) previously told "Vijesti" that almost 14.000 drivers were fined for illegal parking in the capital last year. Of that number, they said at the time, 15 percent of the fines were for illegally parking cars in spaces reserved for people with disabilities (PDVs).
They assessed at the time that this was arrogant and unscrupulous behavior, and added that violations of this type "represent their first priority in resolving them."
"The awareness of these irresponsible individuals, but also the lack of education or lack of culture, as we can comfortably call the arrogant parking of vehicles in spaces designated for the disabled, contribute to this vulnerable category of citizens facing, in addition to the primary ones, additional difficulties in functioning due to the arrogant behavior of irresponsible individuals," the UIP said at the time.
