The acting director of the "Slobodan Škerović" Gymnasium, Zoran Pejović, punished professor Mato Kankaraš with a fine and a 20 percent salary reduction for allegedly serious violation of work obligations, namely "humiliating a colleague", the Center for Civic Education (CCE) announced.
CCE condemned the decision of the Gymnasium to punish Professor Kankaraš, for, as stated in the statement, publicly pointing out the cover-up of a case of sexual harassment by the then principal Biljana Vučurović, which relates to the behavior of Professor Radoman Čečović towards a former student.
The sentence for the cover-up conviction, they said, is almost the same as the one handed down to the professor for sexual harassment, the difference being only 10 percent.
"This decision sends a message that in the 'Slobodan Škerović' Gymnasium and the Montenegrin education system there is no room for critical thinking, professional integrity and freedom of speech, but also for the real protection of students," the statement reads.
The NGO said that educational institutions must be a space where critical thinking is nurtured, not punished.
"We call on the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation to take an urgent and clear decision on this case," it added.
