Their statement added that the State Audit Institution (DRI) also concluded in its report that this case involved abuse of official position to the detriment of the Budget of Montenegro.

The Center for Civic Education (CCE) recently sent an urgent request to the Special State Prosecutor's Office (SDT) requesting information on the status of a criminal complaint regarding the payment of 4,9 million euros to finance secondary religious schools in Montenegro from 2019 to 2023, contrary to the General Law on Education, the non-governmental organization announced.

Their statement published on the Iks platform adds that the State Audit Institution (DRI) also concluded in its report that this case involved abuse of official position to the detriment of the Budget of Montenegro.

"Half a year has passed since the report was filed, and we still have no information on whether investigative actions have been initiated or an order for an investigation has been issued. We understand the workload of the SDT, but we believe that cases like this require urgent action.

"The prosecution must send a clear message that the law applies to everyone and that the damage to the state will be compensated by those who caused it. Selective and inefficient action sends the opposite message - that abuses are paid for, which opens the door to new illegalities, further burdens the work of the SDT and undermines trust in institutions," the CCE said.

The NGO assessed that an efficient approach in such cases is crucial for the rule of law, the budget, but also for citizens' trust that institutions work in the public interest.

"We expect concrete information and action," concluded the CCE.
