Besides being one of the most expensive cities in Montenegro to live in, it has apparently become a luxury to be buried in Budva, because in addition to the fact that there are no free graves in Petrovac, and there are only about ten free ones in the new cemetery in Budva, you have to set aside as much as 6.000 euros to buy a permanent home.
This is the decision of the new city administration, whose councilors from Budva Our City, the European Union, URA, and the Democratic Party of Socialists gave the green light to increase the price of a burial plot from the current 4.800 euros to 6.000 euros.
The only advantage is that if someone wants to pay the entire amount at once, rather than in 12 installments, as is possible from the municipal company Funeral Services that manages the cemeteries, a 10 percent discount is available.
The Mayor of the Municipality made it clear that Budva is grappling with a major problem of a lack of burial places, and that there are no more free ones in Petrovac at the city cemetery. Nikola JovanovicHe said that it is necessary for Budva to get a new city cemetery, and that this is a priority of the current administration he leads.
"We are witnesses that the current cemeteries lack burial places and that this has already become a burdensome problem for the residents of Budva, including the residents of Petrovac. It is necessary that through this new location, which we will be able to nominate in the Municipal Assembly through a decision on public interest, we determine and resolve this issue once and for all for future generations. In a way that this plot should contain enough space for the construction of the cemetery through several phases and so that we never again find ourselves in this situation of a lack of burial places," said Jovanović.
When it comes to Petrovac, where there are no longer any burial sites, Jovanović said that if there are plot owners who are willing to sell in order to expand the existing cemetery, the Municipality is ready to immediately begin talks to purchase them.
New burial sites at the new cemetery near the Church of St. Petka on the city bypass. There will be none this year, as it blocks the conceptual design of the future temple of the Serbian Orthodox Church, which further complicates the whole situation.
Therefore, it is necessary for the Municipality to find a new location for the construction of a new cemetery as soon as possible.
This all stems from the work program of the municipal company Funeral Services for this year.
"Plans for 2025 should consist of the Founder finding a location for a new city cemetery that would meet the needs of the municipality of Budva, whose influx of new residents is increasing year by year. As the Government has determined the draft urban project for the complex of the Orthodox Cathedral in Budva, the company is not able to create more burial sites in 2025. The Budva Funeral Services company has repeatedly pointed out the necessity of finding a new location, where we would not run out of burial sites, which is why we believe that this pressing problem should be resolved as soon as possible, all with the aim of finding the best solution for the interests of our citizens. Since the sale of graves is the item from which the company has the largest income, greater financial assistance from the Founder is needed until a new location for the new city cemetery in Budva is found," the Funeral Services work program states.
Revenue planning, as the document states, is affected by the sale of graves, and therefore the company's operations.
"In 2025, there will be no possibility of building new tombs because, according to the current conceptual design, which includes the construction of a temple and chapel, there is no room for new tombs. With these facts, the company is entering a very demanding business because the sale of vacant tombs will be limited," the company's work program states.
The company had previously warned about the lack of burial sites, stating that there were no more free graves in Petrovac, that Budva was entering the "red zone", and that the construction of a new cemetery was necessary because the city had experienced a demographic boom.
The Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro is one step closer to achieving the goal of building the largest Orthodox church on the Adriatic coast, dedicated to the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Mark, which is planned to be built in Budva, on the property of the Church of St. Petka.
The Council for the Review of the Urban Planning Project for the Orthodox Cathedral Complex in Budva gave a positive opinion on the report on the public discussion of this planning document, which created the conditions for continuing the procedure, namely the development of a proposal for this planning document.
The draft Urban Planning Project for the Orthodox Cathedral Complex in Budva was approved by the Government at a session chaired by Prime Minister Milojko Spajić in early December 2023. The planning document envisages the relocation of the existing city chapel, located on the property of the Church of St. Petka on the city bypass from block 18 to the neighboring block 29.
In block 18, a temple with an accompanying building, a bell tower and a plateau is planned. A parking area with about 170 spaces, conservation of the Main cemetery and preservation of the complex of the Church of Saint Petka in accordance with the Cultural Heritage Protection Study are also planned.
In Block 29, the construction of a new city chapel with a plateau is planned in accordance with the project of the existing city chapel, access service road, expansion and arrangement of the existing cemetery.
