Hate speech and violence against women are becoming a worrying pattern that we as a society must not tolerate, said the President of the Capital City Assembly, Jelena Borovinić Bojović.
"Regarding the recent attack on journalist Magdalena Čelanović, I express my strong condemnation not only of this incident, but also of the increasingly frequent attacks on women in public life," she said.
"This case, like a number of others we have witnessed recently, warns us that hate speech and violence against women, whether verbal or physical, are becoming a worrying pattern that we as a society must not tolerate," she stressed.
She said that "our reaction" must be principled and impartial - that every attack on a woman, regardless of her political affiliation, profession or any other affiliation, deserves clear condemnation and decisive action by the competent institutions.
Borovinić Bojović said that, on behalf of the Capital City Assembly and on her own behalf, she expresses solidarity with every woman who has been exposed to attacks and threats.
"I call on all social actors to contribute to creating an environment in which women will not feel threatened because they participate in public life. Protecting the dignity, integrity and safety of every woman is the obligation of all of us," the statement reads.
