The Center for Civic Education (CCE) recalled that seven years have passed since the attempted murder of journalist Olivera Lakić, and that the case still does not have a final judicial epilogue.
They say that the multiple postponements of the trial are worrying, which, in addition to prolonging justice, further undermines the sense of safety among journalists in Montenegro.
"Despite the attempted liquidation, Lakić continued to engage in journalism, with high professional standards, addressing some of the most dangerous and sensitive topics. Her perseverance and courage should be a guide for all journalists, but also a call to action for institutions," the CCE announced.
They said that each new delay sends a dangerous message that attacks on journalists can be tolerated and go unpunished, which "further undermines the already low trust in the judiciary."
They say that media freedom must be guaranteed – not just declaratively, but through efficient and swift judicial processes.
"This case is also a test for the rule of law and Chapters 23 and 24 within the framework of Montenegro's accession to the EU. CCE calls on the competent institutions to finally accelerate the process and bring it to a final conclusion, instead of counting decades of uncertainty," the NGO said.
