Victory Day over Fascism was marked today with a wreath-laying ceremony in Bijelo Polje.

The Mayor of the Municipality, Petar Smolović, said that today we are celebrating together one of the most important dates in modern history - Victory Day over Fascism, the day when the evil that threatened humanity was defeated, but also Europe Day, a symbol of peace, unity and progress.

"On this day, we proudly recall the heroic struggle of the people of Montenegro, and especially the national heroes and fighters from Bijelo Polje, who made an immeasurable contribution in the fight against the fascist occupier. Their courage, their sacrifice, their faith in freedom – this is the foundation on which our present-day freedom and our society rest. Bijelo Polje, throughout its history, has shown that it knows how to stand on the right side of history. A city of multiculturalism, coexistence and solidarity, today more than ever must be an example of togetherness and resistance to every form of hatred, intolerance and extremism," said Smolović.

Europe Day, he added, reminds us of the importance of cooperation, mutual respect and striving for European values. Montenegro is committed to being part of the European family of nations, and Bijelo Polje will, as before, be a reliable partner on that path.

"Our obligation is not just to remember – but to preserve the truth, to teach young people about the values of anti-fascism and to build a society of justice, tolerance and solidarity every day," said Smolović.

In addition to the Municipality delegation, wreaths were laid at the Monument to Fallen Soldiers by delegations of the veterans' organizations UBNORA and OBNORA, as well as by political parties: DPS, BS, European Union, SNP and URA.
