In the past five years, a total of 140 drivers have been fined for negligent and illegal use of car horns (sirens), the Police Directorate told "Vijesti".
According to them, the driver is obliged to reduce the use of audible warning signals to the necessary extent.
"The driver may not use a variable frequency audible warning signal, except in cases prescribed by the Road Traffic Safety Act," the Police Directorate said.
The Law on Road Traffic Safety, in Article 53, stipulates that the driver is obliged to use an audible warning signal when required for traffic safety reasons.
The Police Directorate reminds that the fine for reckless driving ranges from 30 to 60 euros.
Several citizens confirmed to "Vijesti" that traffic in the capital is problematic, especially the use of sound signals.
Marko Milović: "We are a small town, we can go everywhere on foot, by bus or by bike. But that is our culture. A car represents status for us, not a means of transportation. Bad traffic can simply be solved with more buses. I have never heard of anyone being fined for excessive use of the siren, but that does not surprise me, even major things are not sanctioned here."
Jovan Mugoša: "The sirens bother us, of course, as I assume others do, especially pedestrians. I don't know how we could work on that. Traffic and the uncontrolled use of sound signals are among the most pressing problems in the city."
Katarina Šljukić: "It causes hysteria when we drive. There are always crowds and there is no longer just one part of the day when it is rush hour. Now it is rush hour all day. I can understand the excessive use of the siren to some extent, because we are all in a hurry, but it is creating unnecessary tension."
Petar Klakor: "They are unpleasant and can be a distraction for both drivers and pedestrians. They can be confusing for novice traffic drivers. Traffic in the city center is a big problem and needs to be regulated."
Stanija Ljumović: "I'm used to them, because I travel by bus every day. I used to be a driver, but I wouldn't dare to do that now. What bothers me the most is when they block traffic at intersections and play music."
