A ceremonial procession through the streets of Nikšić concluded the traditional spiritual and cultural event "Days of Saint Basil of Ostrog", which began on May 7th and was organized by the Diocese of Budimlje-Niksić, the Church Municipality and the Municipality of Nikšić.
The procession, which has been held in Nikšić since 1996 and was attended by a large number of citizens this year, despite the rain that seemed to have become the trademark of the procession, was led by Metropolitan Joanikije of Montenegro and the Littoral, a large number of bishops, numerous clergy and monks.
Also present were the heads of local government, the presidents of the Municipality and the Municipal Assembly, Marko Kovačević and Nemanja Vuković.
Metropolitan Joanikije and Bishop Irinej of East America delivered sermons at the city's Freedom Square.
Tonight at 21 pm there will be a big fireworks display in front of the Cathedral on the occasion of Saint Basil's Day, the feast day of the temple.
Saint Basil was born Stojan Jovanović in 1610 in the village of Mrkonjići, Herzegovina. He became a monk in the Trebinje Monastery of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He came to the Ostrog Monastery after the destruction of the Tvrdoš Monastery. He became Metropolitan of Herzegovina in 1639. He died on this day, in 1671, and his relics are kept in the Vavedenjski Temple, in the Upper Monastery of Ostrog.
