The 88th "Critical Mass" bicycle ride was held in Podgorica last weekend on the occasion of the International Day of Active Movement, organized by the non-governmental organization NGO Biciklo.me and the Institute of Public Health of Montenegro, under the slogan "Move for Health", NGO Biciklo.me announced today.
The statement added that more than 300 people of all generations enjoyed cycling through the streets of Podgorica for nine kilometers, sending a strong message about the importance of active movement for maintaining health.
"Cycling brings numerous benefits to people's physical and mental health, so much so that many health experts around the world consider it one of the most effective medicines and actively prescribe it to their patients. That is why it is essential that decision-makers in Montenegro understand how important it is to create conditions for active movement - whether by bicycle or on foot - to be a logical and simple choice for citizens," said Stefan Bulatović from Biciklo.me.
Dr. Vilnerina Ramčilović, a social medicine specialist and director of the Center for Health Promotion at the Institute of Public Health, said that whether ridden recreationally or used as a means of transportation, cycling is a fantastic way to stay active and in good shape.
"Regular physical activity is a key element of healthy lifestyles, and the recommendation for all age groups is at least 30 to 45 minutes of moderate physical activity per day. Cycling is an ideal way to achieve this goal," Ramčilović pointed out.
Biciklo.me said that International Physical Activity Day, which is celebrated on May 10th, aims to raise awareness about the importance of regular physical activity in improving health.
"Regular cycling can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes. In addition, it strengthens the immune system, muscles and bones, improves movement coordination and reduces stress levels. Also, research has shown that obesity is significantly less common among people who regularly use bicycles in their daily activities, compared to those who lead a sedentary lifestyle. In addition, cycling stimulates the secretion of hormones such as endorphins and serotonin, which positively affect mood and contribute to emotional well-being," said Biciklo.me.
They say that in addition to health benefits, it is known that the use of bicycles in cities reduces noise and pollution levels, while at the same time improving air quality and contributing to a more pleasant living environment.
"This 'critical mass' has confirmed that more and more citizens of Podgorica are turning to healthy lifestyles. The organizers hope that such actions will further motivate both citizens and relevant institutions to actively work on promoting cycling and walking as sustainable and healthy forms of movement in Montenegro," Biciklo.me said in a statement.
