The Government today approved a proposal to amend the Law on the Constitutional Court, which stipulates that judges and the president of that court are entitled to a salary supplement in the amount of 30 percent of the basic salary.
The Government announced that the judges and the President of the Constitutional Court are thus equal in rights to other holders of judicial positions.
"The adoption of the law stems from the principle that a judge has the right to a salary in accordance with the dignity of the judicial office and the responsibility of the judge," the statement said.
In the discussion at the Government session, it was emphasized that judges' salaries guarantee their independence and material security.
"So, the only possible interim solution was to prescribe an addition to the function in organizational laws in order to increase the salaries of judges, until the Law on Salaries and Other Rights Related to the Performance of Judicial and Constitutional Court Functions is adopted," the statement states.
The Government said that the Judicial Reform Strategy for the period from 2024 to 2027 and the accompanying action plan foresee a measure related to the establishment of a Bill regulating the financial position of holders of judicial and constitutional court functions.
As they stated, the Government's Work Program envisages the establishment of a proposal for a special law on wages for the fourth quarter of this year.
"Since the procedure for drafting a special law is complex, the working group concluded that the best interim solution would be to prescribe in the organizational laws the introduction of a bonus for judges and state prosecutors in the amount of 30 percent of the basic salary," the statement said.
