Although it is late spring according to the calendar, the snow that covered the mountains and higher villages around Kolašin this morning is not an uncommon occurrence. In these areas, May has brought snowflakes and frost in previous years, especially on Bjelasica, Sinjajevina and Komovi.
Few herders have already reached the katun; most are waiting for the weather to stabilize before they "rise". However, even those who have found themselves on the mountain explain that they are used to the vagaries of the Kolašin spring and that "May knows how to deceive".
Dragomir Šćepanović and Ljubiša Kuburović are staying in the Rupe Rečinske katun, in huts or weekend houses. Šćepanović says that he is without livestock on the mountain and that he came to recover, while Kuburović is at the katun with sheep. There is enough hay for the livestock, so the snow is not too much of a challenge for now. It is bad, they explain, for livestock farmers when “winter when it is not its time” finds them on the mountain without enough food for their livestock.
In the village of Kraljske Bare, this morning is also the first day of winter. The fields with already planted vegetables are covered with snow, and the farmers hope that there will not be too much damage. Milovan Labović's household says that they have hay for the cattle "for next year as well", but they fear that the drop in temperature below zero will cause damage to the fruit trees that are now in bloom. For those that have bloomed, he explains, the damage may not be total.
