Montenegro has two metropolitans as of yesterday - this title was given to Bishop Metodije of Budimlje-Niksic by the decision of the Holy Council of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC).
Until yesterday, Methodius was the bishop of Budimlje-Niksic, and in addition to the title of metropolitan, he was also given the title of archbishop.
This was told to "Vijesti" by sources close to the Patriarchate.
According to the same information, the eparchy did not receive the status of a metropolitanate, but rather the bishop of the Eparchy of Budimlje-Niksic received the title of metropolitan and archbishop.
The regular session of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church concluded yesterday at the Temple of Saint Sava in Belgrade.
Some media outlets reported that it was decided at the session that Methodius would also become a member of the Holy Synod.
Metropolitan Metodije, born in 1976 in Sarajevo, was tonsured a monk in 2004 at the Cetinje Monastery, and was ordained a bishop in 2018. He was enthroned as the head of the Eparchy of Budimlje-Niksic in 2021 at the Đurđevi Stupovi Monastery in Berane.
Sources close to the Patriarchate said that the Serbian Orthodox Church will make an official statement regarding the decisions made during the session.
The Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral is an eparchy of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
The competent hierarch is Metropolitan Joanikije, and the seat of the metropolitanate is located in Cetinje.
