The Mayor of Podgorica, Saša Mujović, and his associates today officially opened a new temporary parking lot on the site of the former "Morača" barracks.
He says that this is a responsible and functional response to the traffic jams that have significantly burdened the city center in the past.
The parking lot has 430 spaces, and will be free for citizens until June 2nd.
"After a long time, the capital is getting a large parking area in the city center. The new city administration has invested significant effort to bring this space to its intended purpose. I would especially like to emphasize that the parking lot is temporary, this is not a concreteization of Podgorica, nor an unplanned action. We are faced with a serious problem of traffic jams and a lack of parking space, and we wanted to solve this problem, at least temporarily, with as little investment as possible," said Mujović, as announced by the Capital City.

"The solution to our problems is large underground garages - like the garage under Independence Square, and we are also planning facilities on Božana Vučinić Square, next to the temple and at several other locations for which extensive activities are already underway. Our goal is for this space to soon become home to the Museum of Contemporary Art, the House of Architecture and other cultural facilities, while preserving green spaces," said the Mayor of Podgorica.

"Parking Servis" director Nikola Lazović said that the new area is modern and functional:
"Today, we are opening 430 parking spaces on the site of the former 'Morača' barracks. This project represents the best solution for relieving the burden on the city center and improving the transport infrastructure. The parking lot is modern, functional and accessible to all citizens. Until June 2, its use will be free of charge, so that citizens can get into the habit of using it," he said.

The President of the Capital City Assembly, Jelena Borovinić Bojović, thanked all the services that contributed to the realization of the project.
"This is a temporary solution while we wait for the completion of all necessary administrative procedures that will enable the construction of underground garages. The Secretariat for Transport and Roads have worked dedicatedly and intensively to address the problem that has been burdening our city for a long time without delay," she said.

The Capital City announced that, by opening a temporary parking lot on the site of the former barracks, they have shown their willingness to respond responsibly and quickly to the needs of citizens, without losing sight of the long-term goals of urban transformation.
"This initiative represents an important step towards creating a more functional and accessible city core, while preserving space for future cultural and development projects," the statement reads.
