Women and girls with disabilities must not be exposed to violence and discrimination, it was stated at today's session of the Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The Government session was chaired by the president of that body, Minister of Human and Minority Rights Fatmir Đeka.
"The Council session discussed one of the most important and sensitive topics of our society - discrimination and violence against women and girls with disabilities, who often face multiple and intersectional discrimination - based on sex, gender, disability, belonging to a certain social group, but also often due to an unfavorable socio-economic position. Women and girls with disabilities often remain on the margins of society, their voices are not heard enough, and their basic human rights are ignored, which is why the invisibility and silence on these topics must be ended," the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights announced.
They said that it is particularly important to develop policies in all sectors to protect women and girls with disabilities from violence, so that the standards prescribed by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities are fully implemented.
"The Council session recommended that all bodies, within their jurisdiction, treat the issue of violence against women and girls with disabilities with special attention, as well as take measures to prevent violence against women and girls with disabilities, as well as strengthen multisectoral cooperation. Also, the Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities calls on all holders of public authority and the media to report from a human rights perspective when reporting on issues of persons with disabilities," the statement reads.
