The media can be of great help to the state in preserving the environment, it was said at the panel "The Role of the Media in the Fight for the Environment" at the conference marking the launch of the national campaign "Protect and Let It Protect You".

Executive Director of Vijesti Marijana Bojanić said that people in Montenegro are interested in environmental topics and that they just need to find channels to reach them.

"What is important is that institutions go more towards the media with service information, such as information on where to report and what happens after that report," said Bojanić.

She stated that Vijesti happily agreed to distribute and advertise a small dictionary of ecology and environmental protection.

The General Director of Radio Television of Montenegro, Boris Raonić, said that informing is a priority and that the example of Vijesti, whose readers received a small dictionary of ecology and environmental protection with the issue, is certainly great.

"Promotion during the fight against plastic bags and simply informing citizens are some of the ways we as companies can do something about this issue," said Raonic.

He pointed out that the Public Service has been doing numerous things for four years that should indicate how everyone - society, citizens, individuals and companies - should work.

The Executive Director of Television E, Sonja Drobac, said that citizens are right to say that they are not sufficiently informed, but that, on the other hand, when the media offer these topics, they often receive lower ratings compared to daily political squabbles, show business news, and the like.

She emphasized that the role of the media is to inform, but that today it is no longer enough to just inform.

"Today we know how to connect the dots, causes, consequences and contexts, to do it in a way that is interesting to people, that is, to reach them, and we have to reach them by skipping algorithms," Drobac said.

Assistant editor-in-chief of the newspaper Dan Mili Prelević said that the Damara survey, which showed that just under 29 percent of respondents consider themselves mostly or very well informed on the topic of environmental protection, shows that the media has not done its job.

He believes that the media must be the beginning and the end of this campaign and be active in it by changing something in their reporting.

"I think even if the state gets involved in this as they promised today, we've heard from everyone, from the prime minister to the deputy prime minister and ministers, we'll be a big help," said Prelević, adding that it would also be a big help if they published the names of those who cause incidents.

Pobjeda's Executive Director and Editor-in-Chief Nenad Zečević said that the media outlet has one page dedicated to ecology every day, as well as a specialized columnist who deals with ecology, Chapter 27, and climate change issues.

"We have been reporting extensively on all environmental incidents in Montenegro, including the one with infected cows. We even went so far as to photograph and write reports regarding the burial of these cows, which we believe was not done in accordance with standards," said Zečević.
