The Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development (MERS) will launch info days and a set of workshops on the LIFE program for the environment and climate action of the European Union (EU), announced the relevant minister, Damjan Ćulafić.
He stated that MERS held an information session about the LIFE program, where participants were informed about the plans that MERS plans to implement in the coming period.
"After the designation of a program officer from the Climate Change, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), info days and a set of workshops will be initiated, in coordination with the program officer and the National Contact Point," said Ćulafić.
As he added, a special section has been opened on the MERS website that contains all important information about the LIFE program.
Ćulafić pointed out that, by signing the Agreement on Accession to the EU LIFE Programme for the Environment and Climate Action, through which the EU allocated EUR 600 million to finance actions in the field of environment and climate, they have taken an important step towards sustainable development and strengthening capacities for the conservation of natural resources.
"In the field of the environment, Montenegro can use funds for projects that contribute to the preservation of natural resources, the protection of biodiversity and the improvement of environmental quality," Ćulafić explained.
According to him, it is possible to develop projects that deal with the revitalization and protection of sensitive ecosystems, including wetlands, mountain rivers, and forest areas.
"LIFE funds can support the establishment of a system for monitoring endangered plant and animal species, the development of protected area management plans, and the implementation of conservation measures in accordance with the Habitats and Birds Directives," added Ćulafić.
As he pointed out, projects dealing with improving air quality in urban areas, rationalizing the use of natural resources, as well as establishing systems for the prevention and control of soil and water pollution are of particular importance.
"Montenegro can also develop education and awareness-raising projects about the importance of nature conservation, including activities with local communities and schools, in order to strengthen citizen participation in environmental protection," said Ćulafić.
