The President of the Bosniak Council in Montenegro, Suljo Mustafić, attended the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, which was held for the first time in the US Senate building in Washington.
As announced by the Bosniak Council, the commemoration was attended by representatives of Congress, the American government, and other dignitaries from public and political life.
The participants were addressed by Congressmen Jake Akinklas, Mike Turner, Wesley Bell, Gene Shahin, Selma Žižak Porča from the Congress of Bosniaks of North America, Emir Suljagić, director of the Memorial Center in Potočari, as well as Sabahudin Ćeman, Mufti of North America.
Selma Porča, as stated in the statement, pointed out that by organizing this event, the Congress of Bosniaks of North America confirmed the value and obligation of remembering the genocide in Srebrenica.
"Thirty years ago, Bosniaks were the target of genocide. Instead of being erased, today we have gathered in the US Senate, not as victims, but as active and successful members of American society," she said.
During the meeting and conversation with Congressman Akinklas, Mustafić thanked Congress for its support and emphasized the importance of remembering the genocide in Srebrenica, the need for continuous education in school systems and the public and media spheres, the Bosniak Council added.
"Your support for commemorating the genocide in Srebrenica and preserving the culture of remembrance is support for dealing with the past and reconciliation in the region. Our councils care about preserving identity, but they strongly support cooperation and connecting our countries on sound foundations, gathered around Euro-Atlantic and democratic values," he said.
Mustafić, who is also the president of the Bosniak Councils Association, leads the delegation in meetings in Congress and the State Department, as well as in meetings with emigrants.
The organizer of the gatherings in Washington is the Congress of Bosniaks of North America, which is a member of the Parent Association of Bosniak Councils, the statement concludes.
